Description
Historic Church Year Woodcuts compiled by Pastor Andrew Richard, Mount Hope Lutheran Church and School, Casper, WY (The product consists of a PDF of this same information with the same link.)
The woodcuts in this folder correspond to the historic lectionary and were originally published in the postils (sermon collections) of Martin Luther and Valerius Herberger. The call numbers at the end of each file name indicate the year of publication and the author of the sermons. Digital images are provided courtesy of Pitts Theology Library, Candler School of Theology, Emory University: https://dia.pitts.emory.edu/dia/index.cfm.
Most file names have a number before them; this is simply to allow easy sorting according to the order of the Church Year. Here’s a reference list, along with the number of images for each day in parentheses. Note that a few of the images are duplicates and were simply reused for different printings of postils. If you download a PDF and look at the file info, you should be able to see the
link from which the image came.

I have done my best to label the woodcuts correctly for the Sundays and Feast Days of the Church Year; they were not always arranged chronologically in the digital image archive, and were not labeled there according to the days of the Church Year. I think that some of the woodcuts labeled “7. Christmas 1” were originally for the Purification of Mary and Presentation of Our Lord.
Te woodcuts labeled “23. Passion Sunday” were originally labeled “Appearance” or “Post-Resurrection Appearance.” If those are indeed an image of a post-resurrection appearance of Jesus, that would mean there are no images of Holy Week from those postils; they would skip from Judica (Lent 5) to post-resurrection. I’m also not sure to which post-resurrection event the image would correspond. Since the image features a cross prominently, I associated it with Holy Week. Without being able to look at the text of the book, I’m not sure whether this is correct or not (it may indeed be an image of Jesus after His resurrection). There are likely other points of confusion beyond these. If you notice anything that’s out of place, please let me know.
Images from the Digital Image Archive are in the public domain. The folks there ask that you add a credit line if you use one of their images: “Digital image provided courtesy of Pitts Theology Library, Candler School of Theology, Emory University.” You can read more about permissions and get their contact info here: https://dia.pitts.emory.edu/dia/permissions-for-use.cfm.
These images should prove useful for families and Lutheran school teachers and students who would like to meditate further on the Gospel reading for a given Sunday or Feast Day. The images would also make fine bulletin covers. As artworks that were designed to be printed in black and white, they look nice without having to use a color copier. These images tie us to our Lutheran
heritage and history. They were made to teach, and it is fruitful to reflect on the image while looking over the Gospel reading. May these images lead you to deeper meditation on the Word of God.
In Christ,
Pastor Andrew Richard
